An Industry Imperiled by Falling Profits and Shrinking Ads

In just the last few weeks, The San Diego Union-Tribune eliminated more than 100 jobs, one-tenth of its work force. The Chicago Sun-Times began a major round of newsroom layoffs, then put itself up for sale, and publishers in Minneapolis and Philadelphia warned that tough economics could force cuts there.

A newsstand in New York. Some major newpapers have several times as many readers online as in print, but grim financial reports have forced the papers to downsize.

Not long ago, news like that would have drawn much commentary and hand-wringing in the newspaper business, but in the last few months, reductions have become so routine that they barely make a ripple outside each paper's hometown. Since mid-2007, major downsizing — often coupled with grim financial reports — has been imposed at The San Francisco Chronicle, The Seattle Times, The San Jose Mercury News, USA Today and many others.

The talk of newspapers' demise is older than some of the reporters who write about it, but what is happening now is something new, something more serious than anyone has experienced in generations. Last year started badly and ended worse, with shrinking profits and tumbling stock prices, and 2008 is shaping up as more of the same, prompting louder talk about a dark turning point.

"I'm an optimist, but it is very hard to be positive about what's going on," said Brian P. Tierney, publisher of The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Philadelphia Daily News. "The next few years are transitional, and I think some papers aren't going to make it."

Advertising, the source of more than 80 percent of newspaper revenue, traditionally rose and fell with the overall economy. But in the last 12 to 18 months, that link has been broken, and executives do not expect to be able to repair it completely anytime soon.

In 2007, combined print and online ad revenue fell about 7 percent. In the last six decades, only one other year — 2001, when there was a recession — had a steeper decline, according to the Newspaper Association of America. Adjusted for inflation, 2007 ad revenue was more than 20 percent below its peak in 2000.

Circulation revenue has declined steadily since 2003, and the number of copies sold has been slipping about 2 percent a year. Some of the largest papers — including The San Francisco Chronicle, The Boston Globe and The Los Angeles Times — have lost 30 to 40 percent of their circulation in just a few years.

The long-term shift of advertising to the Internet — especially classified ads for things like jobs, cars and houses — accelerated last year. The real estate downturn hit the newspaper business hard, especially in California and Florida, where real estate ads fell more than 20 percent at some newspapers.

Over all, local advertising has fallen, while "the national ad market is still strong," said Alexia Quadrani, an analyst at Bear Stearns & Company. "Local advertisers have been swallowed up, and there are just fewer. Your local pharmacy becomes CVS; your local hardware store becomes Home Depot."

In the last few days, several newspaper companies have reported weak December results, and they warned that January looked similarly bad and that the situation would worsen in a recession.

"The traditional cyclical factors are turning south at the same time as the structural factors," said Ken Doctor, an industry analyst with the research firm Outsell. "It's a very sobering time."

Newspaper executives and analysts say that it could take five to 10 years for the industry's finances to stabilize and that many of the papers that survive will be smaller and will practice less ambitious journalism.

Some companies may look for buyers, but it is not clear how much of a market for newspapers remains. The first test will come from the Sun-Times Media Group, which announced Monday that after suffering deep losses and closing several small weekly papers, it would try to sell any assets it could, including its flagship paper, The Sun-Times.

Others may seek shelter from market pressures by becoming nonprofit or going private; the Tribune Company recently did both. Other publishers, like the Washington Post Company and the E. W. Scripps Company, are shielded somewhat by having highly profitable non-newspaper holdings, but even they have made cuts.

Critics of the industry — including many executives within it — say that newspapers have done a poor job adapting to the Internet and working creatively and aggressively to sell ads.

Mr. Tierney agrees, "but you could change that and still be sliding," he said. "When everyone's taking on water, you can't expect to stay dry — only less wet."

A Guide to Sidestepping Common Advertising Pitfalls

A Guide to Sidestepping Common Advertising Pitfalls For too long, too many people have gotten into advertising with some strange ideas, founded more in emotion than logic and research. One of the most common myths along these lines is the idea that advertising should be safe and homogenous in order to reach and connect with the largest possible demographic. Perish the thought. First of all, your advertising has no business trying to reach the largest possible demographic.

The best advertising is targeted advertising, and you will need to know your audience before setting forth. Secondly, the most egregious sin in an ad campaign is to create an ad that is instantly forgettable. Better to offend Grandma (who would have had little to no interest in your business to begin with) than to have an ad that no one can remember. Of course, creating inoffensive advertising isn't a deathtrap in itself, but it shouldn't be your primary focus, if it is a focus at all. These and other advertising pitfalls are covered in this article.

If you want to create the kind of advertising that sticks in people's minds and makes them remember you and think of you when they need your service, the last thing you want to do is copy the competition. Can things be learned from the competition? Certainly. There's nothing wrong with seeing what works on a deeper psychological level and using some of that to your own benefit. But that's where the emulation should end. If all advertising sounds or looks the same, people stop paying attention.

If you drive around a neighborhood where every house looks identical, does anything draw you to stop and stare at any particular house on the block? Of course not. You might as well keep on driving, with the houses simply falling into the background scenery. On the other hand, if there's a house on the corner with pink walls, an audacious lawn ornament, a hedge maze, and a pig running around the front yard, you're probably going to stop and figure out what the hell is going on. The same concept applies to advertising. Don't be afraid to step way out of the box. That's the kind of advertising that gets people talking.

At the same time, don't get so enthralled with your ability to create wacky ads that you forget you have a product to sell. Plenty of companies make this mistake as well, trying so hard to entertain their audience that they fear doing anything traditional because they don't want to come across as just another ad. You're not making movies here, you're selling your business. At some point, you have to get across a message. You can and should do it in an entertaining and fun way, a way that has never been tried before. . .even an annoying way, but you must do it. People can scratch their heads after seeing your ad and try to figure out what it meant, but they must at least know what it was advertising in the first place.

McClatchy Swings to a Quarterly Profit

The McClatchy Company, the newspaper publisher, reported a fourth-quarter profit after a loss a year ago, but it continued to be hurt by the housing slump in California and Florida.

The company said it would take an accounting charge to reflect further declines in its share price.

McClatchy said that the advertising outlook for 2008 was not any better and that it now expects first-quarter advertising to decline in the low double-digit percentage range.

The company reported preliminary net income of $30.1 million for the fourth quarter, in contrast to a loss of $279.3 million in the period a year earlier. That included losses from The Minneapolis Star Tribune, which McClatchy has since sold.

The latest figures did not include an expected noncash impairment charge, which McClatchy said it would announce later when it submits its regulatory filing.

The chief executive, Gary B. Pruitt, said on a conference call that the write-down was coming because of accounting rules that require companies to adjust the carrying value of their assets, a formula that is heavily affected by share price.

McClatchy had already taken a previous impairment charge of $1.4 billion for its third quarter to reflect its falling share price, but its share price has continued to slide, losing about half its value from the end of the third quarter.

McClatchy's shares, like those of many other newspaper publishers, have been badly beaten down over investor concerns about vulnerability to a slowing economy and advertising losses to online rivals.

On Wednesday, however, McClatchy's shares bounced back, reaching a high of $12 a share before closing at $10.54, a rise of 19 cents.

Mr. Pruitt said the company was seeing a pronounced cyclical impact from the downturns in California and Florida, as the housing slump reduced advertising revenue. Papers in those two states accounted for two-thirds of the company's revenue loss for 2007.

In the period a year ago, the net loss was $3.40 a share. Without the one-time losses, earnings from continuing operations were 94 cents a share.

Revenues fell 15 percent, to $573.4 million. The period a year ago included one more week than the most recent quarter. Without that effect, revenues fell 9 percent, the company said.

BANGALORE: Toyota Kirloskar Motor celebrated its 10th anniversary in India with a high-profile visit from Katsuaki Watanabe, president of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) to India. At a dinner to mark the occasion, Mr Watanabe talked about TMC's global business, vision and business interests in India.

The Ambassador of Japan to India, Mr H Domichi, attended the dinner along with the officials from the government of Karnataka, senior public personalities, Toyota dealers, suppliers and business partners. Mr Watanabe described Toyota's Global Vision 2020 through which Toyota tries to harmonize the "Cycle of Industry" with the "Cycles of Nature".

Toyota constantly seeks to create new value in all their endeavors to bring the dreams of their customers and society to reality. This will be implemented in the areas ranging from the evolution of the car to the further improvement and learning's derived from the car.

BANGALORE: Volvo Buses recently inaugurated a new body plant in Bangalore. This means that the company gains a base for production of complete buses for India and other strongly growing markets in Asia. Since the first introduction in India in 2001, Volvo Buses has manufactured chassis together with Volvo Trucks in an own plant in Bangalore.

The bodies were produced by an external body builder, Jaico Automobiles. Now, when Volvo Buses takes the step to start its own body plant adjacent to the chassis plant, it is to increase flexibility with regard to production capacity and to further improve quality. The body plant is being operated in a new joint-venture company with the cooperation partner Jaico Automobiles.

The company is named Volvo Bus Body Technologies India and Volvo Buses holds a 70% ownership interest. The new plant has a capacity of 1,000 buses annually and the company expects to have about 600 employees at the end of this year. BANGALORE: Who says 20 paise coins and old Re 1 coins are not in demand? 'Coin collectors' pay an additional 50 paise to pick up old Re 1 coins and 30 paise extra for 20 paisa coins. Where do the collected coins go? They come back to you in the form of shaving blades, jewellery and sometimes even as bullets and pellets for country-made pistols and small fire arms.

The organized coin conversion business is said to be thriving in Bangalore. The arrest of four in Tamil Nadu three days ago has proved this beyond doubt. Last week, the Tamil Nadu police arrested Jayaraj, (31), Ali alias Mohammed, (38), Sheikh alias Sheikh Mydeen, (36) and Sheikh Mohammed (34). They recovered a bag full of coins worth Rs 85,000, weighing 700 kg, from them.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that coins are supplied to one Manikantan in Bangalore. His telephone number has been traced. The Tamil Nadu police have now sought BSNL's assistance in Bangalore to trace Manikantan's address.
"We are not sure of the real motive behind this old coin consignment. The arrested were only suppliers. One of the accused has said nickel is extracted from old coins which will be used in shaving blades and making jewellery in Bangalore," Nagercoil superintendent of police Santosh Kumar, told TOI.

The officer added that the Nagercoil is expected to seek the help of the Bangalore police to nab the culprits.

"A year ago, we busted a similar trade in Tirunelveli. However there was no Bangalore connection to that raid," the officer added.

An investigating officer from Nagercoil said the possibility of extracted nickel from these old coins being used in bullet making can't be ruled out. However, ballistic experts from Forensic Science Laboratory, Bangalore, clarified that there is no use of nickel in fire arms. "The bullets are prepared by lead coated by copper. However, some of 303 rifles manufactured outside India use nickel in some parts of the fire arm," said a ballistics expert from FSL. The expert added that small pellets of nickel can be manufactured, but will not be of any use.

Shop owners in Shivajinagar and Chickpet say there is a large demand for old coins in the city. "Every Sunday, people from Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri collect old coins from their places and come to Bangalore to sell them. For every 100 coins, they get Rs 50 extra," said a trader at Shivajinagar.

About a decade ago, old coins from Bangalore were in great demand in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. However, the demand has decreased over the years after the steel coins replaced the old ones.

Website Designing and Web Hosting Articles

Dedicated Server Price Check
The price of dedicated hosting services has really come down in the past couple of years. In fact, prices have dropped so much for the "budget dedicated server" market. While competitive conditions in both the hosting industry and the computer hardware industry have contributed to the reduction in dedicated hosting costs, don't think that prices were that inflated in the first place. Budget servers are fantastic but it takes more than a competitive market to offer services at such great prices.

Managed Vs. Unmanaged Dedicated Hosting
"Unmanaged dedicated servers" - this is a pretty uninviting term to many, especially the non-gurus, but in most cases is not as "non-servicing" as it seems. In fact, I think someone one day soon, ( who knows maybe me ) will coin a new phrase to replace the term "unmanaged" - similar to how "used cars" is now "pre-owned" or how "apartment complexes" are now "rental communities". The truth is that unless you just picked a lousy provider or have unreasonable expectations, unmanaged hosting offers more service and support than most think.

Virtual Private Servers (VPS) Web Hosting
A Virtual Private Server (VPS), also referred to as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS), provides the features of a dedicated server for multiple web hosting customers to share. At first instance it sounds contradictory, how can you have a dedicated server if it is being shared by multiple users? Isn't that a regular shared or virtual hosting environment?

Dedicated Server vs. Co-location Web Hosting
So - you know shared hosting no longer cuts it, and your single office connection is not enough to host a web server - so which is best, leasing a dedicated server or buying your own server and co-locating it someone's data center?

Web Hosting Basics
What is a Web Host? A Web Host is simply a company that provides you with server space for your website. This includes all of your web pages, graphics, scripts and files. When your web address is typed into a browser, your web host is being contacted to locate and display the requested page.

Choosing a Right Domain Name
Domain names are no longer a web address these days. Many profitable companies have been built around their domain name making it the brand and the company. Choosing the right domain should be as important as naming your product. Given that status, here are some pointers how to find a name that will see you through it all.

Building Customer Trust with Secure E-Commerce
Whether your e-commerce operation involves selling an entire catalogue of items, a small collection of goods, or even just one product, the simple reality is that unless people buy the items for sale on your Web site, you wont make any money. And while the last few years have done a lot to make consumers more comfortable with the idea of shopping online, a significant effort is still necessary, on your part, to convince a potential consumer that they will be doing business with a secure and trustworthy operation.

Dedicated Server: A Smart Choice for Web Site Hosting
Hosting your personal or business web sites on your own dedicated server may seems expensive choice in comparison to shared web hosting, but at the end, it proves a smart choice. Shared web hosting, no matter how well managed, cannot be 100% reliable and stable. However if you have your own dedicated server you can manage to avoid most of the variables affecting the reliability and stability of a server, commonly experienced by shared hosting accounts; variables such as: overload, bad codes and scripts from other users (especially beginners); and, too many applications and components uploaded, and so on.

Is your web site hosting cost effective?
Choosing the right web hosting company is an important aspect in cutting your web hosting costs down. The web hosting industry, boosting several thousand web hosts, is still young and growing at a remarkable pace; hence finding the right host is not only difficult, but very time consuming; fortunately though it is worth the time and effort. There are a few things to keep in mind when exploring; when deciding to form a partnership with the host. Below are just a few things to consider, which directly attribute to final cost.

How to Design a Search Engine Friendly Website?
There are many websites that fail to target their required traffic, even if theyve had some search engine optimization work done. One of the main causes for this is simply because the website isnt search engine friendly.

Help Me Choose: Linux vs. Windows Web Hosting
To help you choose the best operating system (OS) for your Web site to reside on, I have developed the following guidelines: First let's start with a definition of an operating system, which is the software platform on which a web server runs.

Does Your Website Serves the Purpose?
A website should be able to serve the useful purpose and user friendly. Lack of clarity, poor grammar, or lack of organization will mark its effectiveness. It is important to pay attention to little details that make the site easier to use. A website should communicate the ideas and emotions which in turn should evoke a positive and specific response from the visitor.

Running a business is not easy. So much to do and to think about! A decision about your company's website is one of many on your plate but it could be one of the most important.

Whether you need a website and what sort depends on the nature of your business, target market and ways you are planing to reach your potential clients.

A website can be a highly functional selling tool or a simple on-line brochure.

What you will need

Domain name registration

The process by which a company or individual selects a domain name and later officially registers the domain name through an approved domain name registrar. There are few official companies through which you may check domain mane availability and register. Cost for such service may vary but is relatively low and will start at about £3 per year.

Web Hosting

The business of providing the storage, connectivity, and services necessary to serve files for a website

A company that provides web hosting services is called a web host. There are literally thousands of web hosting services, ranging from individuals to worldwide corporations. Your web site developer will be able to advise you on what hosting services are suitable for your company.

Email

You will also need an e mail account. Normally a hosting company will offer email services as well as hosting services.

Service based Business model

If your business offers services that cannot be sold over the Internet, for example, landscaping, plumbing, consultancy, etc, the purpose of a website will be to serve as an on-line brochure, advertising in local on-line directories and generally to appear professional and trustworthy.

Design

Pre-designed template

The most cost effective solution in this case will be a static website. Static website is a website that does not provide any interactivity between it and its users and any changes to the content of the site will have to be undertaken by the web developer.

Such site can be purchased pre-made where buyer is guided to chose from several different templates (looks). Often such service is paid for monthly and the charge is low and include domain name registration and hosting of your website. The benefits of such ready made websites is the relatively low cost. The drawbacks to be considered are not very personal look and feel of the site, limited room for development and growth and fact that you paying for using the web space and do not own your site outright as you would if you paid a web developer to build the site for you. Which is the other of the options.

Bespoke design

If you use a web developer to build the website to your specifications higher cost are to be expected. Such costs will be for graphic design, implementation of the site, domain name registration and hosting of the site. Market varies widely and research will need to undertaken. Contact few local web design companies and request quotes in order to chose one that will suite you best. Good web design company will make sure that your site is search engine friendly, well structured and they will recommend to which directories it will be beneficial to submit your site.

Also they will optimize the site's content and recommend ways of marketing.

Product Based Business or Business with regular changing content

Product based Business model

If your business is product based the need for a website increases. You may not want to sell your product on-line but being able to show it to the potential buyer is crucial.

Look at it as on-line catalog. If your product range is small in and more importantly constant the static site will also suit you. You will need to use a recommended web design company and the cost may vary on average between £400 and £2000.

Content Management and website growth

If your product needs regular updating, for example you sell antique furniture and each peace is different, you will need to be able delete, replace your product or mark as sold the best solution for you is Content Management System (CMS).

A Content Management System is what allows company employees to publish new content to their web sites. It will allow you to be in control of the content of your website. There are many such systems on the market but main thing is to look out for is user friendliness. Complicated system will not only irritate and puzzle you but slow down the content managing process and take time away from running the business. Therefore it is recommended that before such system is bought the demonstration is requested. Contact few companies to compare the cost, usability and suitability of the products on the market.

A good CMS will have a wide spectrum of usability and will be adaptable to the businesses ranging from a small one user system to large multifunction, multiuser system.

E-commerce

E-Commerce (electronic commerce) is the buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet.

An E-commerce and CMS solutions together can provide you with all the tools necessary to establish your company as an Internet retailer. A good E-commerce system combined with CMS will allow you to perform a multitude of functions from managing your products to running promotions.

So, what ever your business there is a solution out there which is right for you. The main advice when buying a website is shop around and do your research.

    MULTIMEDIA FORMATS

Multimedia elements in web design (like sounds or videos) are stored in media files. The most common way to discover the media type is to look at the file extension. Picture formats are recognized by extension like .gif, .jpg as well as others. Sound Formats: - Sound can be stored in many different formats

    1. The MIDI Format: -- The MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a format for sending music information between electronic music devices like synthesizers and PC sound cards.

Sounds stored in the MIDI format have the extension .mid, .midi

    2. The AIFF Format: - The AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) was developed by Apple. Sounds stored in the AIFF format have the extension .aif or .aiff extension

    3. The MP3 Format (MPEG):- MP3 files are actually MPEG file. But the MPEG Format was originally developed for video by the Moving Pictures Expert Group. We can say that MP3 files are the sound part of the MPEG video format. MP3 is one of the most popular sound formats for music recording. The MP3 Encoding system combines good compression (small files) with high quality. Sound stored in the MP3 format has the extension. MP3

    VIDEO FORMAT:-

    1. The AVI (Audio video Interleave) format was developed by Microsoft. The AVI format is supported by all computers running windows, and by all the most popular web browsers. It is a very common format on Internet, but not always possible to play on non-windows computers.

Sound stored in the AVI format has the extension. .avi

    2. THE MPEG Format: - (Moving Picture Expert Group) format is most popular format on the internet its cross-platform, and supported by the entire most popular web browser. Video stores in the MPEG format have the extension .mpg or .mpeg

    3. The Quick Time Format: - The Quick time format was developed by Apple. Quick time is as common format on the Internet, but Quick Time movies cannot be played on a Windows computer without an extra (free) component installed.

Video stored in the Quick Time format have the extension .mov

Using multimedia elements on your website can enhance how your site/business is perceived online. It is however very important not to overdo the number of multimedia elements on your website. If you are unsure how to integrate music, sound or video to your website, why not use a professional web designer who can guide you through the process?

Scientists convert plant waste into valuable fuel

    Last Updated: February 06, 2008 00:48:07
    Plant waste

Canberra, February 5: Researchers at CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organization) and Monash University in Australia, have developed a chemical process that turns green waste into a stable bio-crude oil, which can be used to produce high value chemicals and biofuels, including both petrol and diesel replacement fuels.

According to Dr. Steven Loffler of CSIRO Forest Biosciences, "By making changes to the chemical process, we've been able to create a concentrated bio-crude which is much more stable than that achieved elsewhere in the world."

"This makes it practical and economical to produce bio-crude in local areas for transport to a central refinery, overcoming the high costs and greenhouse gas emissions otherwise involved in transporting bulky green wastes over long distances," he added.

"We've been able to create a concentrated bio-crude which is much more stable than that achieved elsewhere in the world," said Dr. Loffler.

The process uses low value waste such as forest thinnings, crop residues, waste paper and garden waste, significant amounts of which are currently dumped in landfill or burned.

The plant wastes being targeted for conversion into biofuels contain chemicals known as lignocellulose, which is increasingly favoured around the world as a raw material for the next generation of bio-ethanol.

Lignocellulose is both renewable and potentially greenhouse gas neutral. It is predominantly found in trees and is made up of cellulose; lignin, a natural plastic; and hemicellulose.

"By using waste, our Furafuel technology overcomes the food versus fuel debate which surrounds biofuels generated from grains, corn and sugar," said Dr. Loffler.

CSIRO and Monash University will apply to patent the chemical processes underpinning the conversion of green wastes to bio-crude oil once final laboratory trials are completed. (ANI)

A Microsoft-Yahoo! could actually help Google

    Indo Asian News Service
    Last Updated: February 04, 2008 05:18:02
    Microsoft chairman Bill Gates

One may call this a hostile bid, but it's good for Yahoo - for the valuation. If Yahoo! agrees, it needs to cross shareholder and regulatory roadblocks. But even so, Microsoft and Yahoo! together won't add up to becoming serious competition for market leader Google.

This could be the mother of all tech-mergers: A $44.6-billion bid by Microsoft for Yahoo!, at a 62 per cent premium over the market price for Yahoo stocks.

This mega-bid is of course an acknowledgement of Microsoft's failure to monetise its online presence, and of Google's unshakeable dominance. It is ironic that Microsoft, of all companies, is talking about the evils of monopoly and one-player dominance.

Microsoft has been quoted has saying: "Today, the market is increasingly dominated by one player, who is consolidating its dominance through acquisition... together, Microsoft and Yahoo! can offer a credible alternative."

But despite Microsoft's $6-billion acquisition of digital marketing service and technology company aQuantive last year, it still needs Yahoo! for its immense reach with consumers.

The bid is a good thing for Yahoo!, for even if it does not take up its offer (and chances are that it would, for it will not easily get a better offer), this bid still places a high valuation on Yahoo!. And it sets the ground for other bidders and interested venture capitalists in the Silicon Valley.

    If the bid goes through

If the bid goes through, Microsoft will have as much of a challenge integrating two vastly different companies with different cultures, as HP did with Compaq. That is, of course, assuming that (after the shareholders of both companies say 'yes'), the US and European Union regulators agree.

So even though the combined entity would represent nearly nine out of 10 US Internet users' portal visits, and three out of five online ad impressions, in practice, it will not be as easy as that to add up the two companies' figures.

    A strong number one

Google remains a strong number one. But the new combination could pose better competition to the Google goliath than either Microsoft or Yahoo! could or would alone. Someday.

That competition will come into play not before at least a year, or maybe two, while Microsoft-Yahoo! run through regulatory and antitrust scrutiny and get their act together. Then they have to figure out how to integrate the two companies, whittle down costs and overlaps, and, most important, figure out if they want to keep two powerful brands or one in multiple categories.

    India operations

Would the India operations of either Microsoft or Yahoo! be affected? Not for the year ahead. But both have development operations in Bangalore and elsewhere, and it would make sense to rationalise development energies to avoid overlap. Given that Microsoft's development activity in India is growing steadily, though, I do not expect layoffs or any centres shutting down. They may simply evolve, or change focus.

So as of now, the deal, if it comes through, would be a bonanza for Yahoo! shareholders. That includes Yahoo! employees with stock options. Google is probably going to benefit from the confusion in the market, just as HP and Compaq's competitors did in the year after that merger happened.

Best of all, for Google, it's going to get more time to work on some of its plans, especially its mobility plans, and the Android operating system, while its two top competitors iron our their problems and plans.

Which suggests that while the bid (whether it comes through or not) is good for Yahoo!, it isn't bad for Google either.

    Microsoft offers $44bn for Yahoo

$31 per share represents a 62 per cent premium

By Ian Williams 01 Feb 2008

Microsoft has offered to buy Yahoo for $31 per share, a 62 per cent premium on the closing price of $19.18 on 31 January, equating to a total equity value of $44.6bn.

The offer was made by Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer in a letter to Yahoo's board of directors.

"We have great respect for Yahoo, and together we can offer an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market," wrote Ballmer.

Yahoo has been one of Microsoft's closest competitors in the search engine space, but both are completely overshadowed by Google.

Although the combined power of Microsoft and Yahoo would not overtake that of Google's, the acquisition would provide both companies with a lot more clout.

The offer allows Yahoo to receive cash or a fixed number of shares of Microsoft common stock. Yahoo shareholders would get one half cash and one half Microsoft common stock.

Should Yahoo agree to the deal, Microsoft expects that the acquisition would be completed in the second half of 2008, pending all necessary regulatory approvals.
